Diagnose: idiopathic adolescence scoliosis lumbal 40+ °
I'm from China, 38 years old and male. I have Idiopathic Scoliosis with 40+ degree(lower lumbar). When I was 30 years old, I knew I had this disease for the first time in my life. The degree of my lumbar carve has almost not changed. Although there is some discomfort on my lumbar, I have almost no pain at now. There is numbness on my right knee after a walk. Have any adults who have Scoliosis but without surgery? Should I go for a surgery when I was not so old? I'm so scared about surgery.

I've browsed almost all the Egnlish language Scoliosis forum, and now I come to this forum using Google translate tool. I'm interested in the Scroth method and the corset. There are 2 names mentioned many times: Rhamouni, cctec, but I never heard of them in my Country. Do you ever heard of GBW - The Gensingen Brace (By Dr Weiss)? Is it suitable for adults like me?

Thanks!

For adults with scoliosis a brace may provide enormous relief from pain but (especially for "older" adults) it won't reduce the curvature itself.
Why do you think about a brace or even surgery? Scoliosis is not automatically connected to pain - in spite of my heavy scoliosis and my age (64) I don't have any more troubles than anybody else at this age.
The occasional numbness in your knee might also come from something else. What does your doctor say about this?
And what do doctors in China recommend as a treatment for your scoliosis?
Regards, Lady S

Thanks for your quick reply!

Almost all the best scoliosis doctors in China recommend surgery as a treatment if the Cobb angle is above 40 degree. I know brace won't reduce the curvature for adult scoliosis. But can it slow down the curvature deterioration? Or at least it does no harm to the adult scoliosis, Is my understanding correct?

I come to this Germany scoliosis forum using Google translate tool. I found many adults with scoliosis use the Scroth method and the corset. I'm really interested in these methods and want to learn and try.

Can a brace prevent or slow down the curvature deterioration for scoliosis? I have almost no pain at now, but my right lumbar is easy to sour. Does somebody has any suggestion for me? Scroth or brace? Please help me!

I never heard a brace can do this on an adult person (but I am neither a medical doctor nor a specialist for braces).
For the purpose of correcting or stopping the curvature a brace is most effective when worn during growth.
When you read about correcting braces here in this forum you'll learn that they are either worn by children and adolescents, sometimes by very young (early twenties) adults who are still rather flexible.

Wearing a brace means severe restrictions for your daily life - you do accept this gladly if it relieves your pain at the same time,
but, having no troubles, what would you gain?
In Germany surgery for adults is normally only recommended for severe cases with impacts on heart or lungs.

So if I want to slow down the curvature deterioration, Scroth is the only option I can choose, right? Scroth has just been introduced to my country for short time. Although many organizations provided Scroth training, but they are all short term just for learning, which lasts only several classes. The effects of such kind of training are questionable.

I really don't know what should I do. Is this the best option I can choose?

Lady S, many thanks for your patience to answer my questions! You said you have heavy scoliosis with age 64, but without much troubles. Could you please tell me how you managed your scoliosis so well?

So in the moment there is no deteroriation - why do you worry so much about it?
Schroth physiotherapy is meant to be done alone at home on a regular basis, once you have learnt to do it properly.
Occasionally a Schroth physiotherapist should check if the exercises are still done correctly.

In this forum we are almost all neither doctors nor physiotherapists - just patients; so, in fact, we cannot give you advise about the therapy suitable for you. Each case of scoliosis is different, depending on the number of curves, their location and angle, your overall flexibility, the condition of your muscles, tendons and ligaments and so on...

I really don't know... probably I'm just lucky.
I must not lift or carry heavy things or do heavy physical work - this gives me back pain. Apart from this I do a little sports, a little Schroth (both too little...).
All the best for you! Regards, Lady S

In the past years I almost do nothing for my Scoliosis. I don't know the severity of this disease. I think it will remain the same if I don't carry heavy things. This year I want to do some some physical training, but a coach warn me to be careful about my Scoliosis. Now I know Scoliosis with 40+ degree will deteriorate with age. I want to do something for my body.

Thank you for your patience. You let know more about my Scoliosis.
